Accelerator (方通行アクセラレータ: Ippō Tsūkō (Akuserarēta), lit. "One-Way Road") is the anti-hero in the A Certain Magical Index (Toaru Majutsu no Index) series. He is the 1st-ranked Level 5 and the strongest esper currently residing in Academy City.
Superpower
Accelerator's ability is Vector Transformation (ベクトル変換 | Bekutoru Henkan). It allows him to control vectors — any objects with a magnitude and direction. Some examples include, but not limited to, are killing viruses, hacking computers, reflecting sound, deflecting bullets, and stopping Earth's rotation. It is passive and active in usage, making him almost invincible. Accelerator normally applies this ability for defensive and offensive purposes, though its applications are limitless. Because of his massive intellect and calculating prowess, he can quickly understand and apply unknown/strange laws (e.g. dark matter) through the world of numbers.
Appearance/Personality
Accelerator is a skinny teenager who has pale skin, moppy white hair, and red eyes. This is caused by his ability, as it blocks ultraviolet rays, thereby preventing his body from producing melanin. His ability also reduces outside influence so much that it causes a loss of balance in his hormones, giving him what he calls an "androgynous appearance." Regardless, he identifies as male.
He has a rather lazy personality, showing indifference to people and the events that surround him most of the time. He has a vulgar and threatening way of speaking with easy fits of anger, but he is also capable of showing himself to be moderate and rational if the circumstances are serious.
In his free time, he reads manga, drinks coffee, and is somewhat lazy. But when he is enraged or excited such as when fighting a strong or amusing opponent, he breaks into a wide grin and laughs, giving him a maniacal and sadistic appearance.
Trivia
- Accelerator once had a "normal name" which has yet to be revealed, and most likely never will, as he forgot it. The novels state that his last name consists of two kanji and his first name three, yet his name had no real meaning in it.
- Tree Diagram predicted in a fight between him and Misaka Mikoto, she would die in 185 moves. However, the version of the SISTERS Arc in the Railgun manga shows she would have been killed just by reflecting her strongest move, the Railgun, in 3 moves. But this might be inaccurate because Accelerator tends to play with his opponents.
