I know that this question was already asked. But I am looking for a book on partial differential equations that covers the basics . And specifically explains reduction to canonical forms with examples.

$\begingroup$ you obviously didn’t read the chapter labeled partial differential equations. $\endgroup$– Evan GertisFeb 11, 2019 at 19:35

V. I. Arnold Lectures on Partial Differential Equations
Take a look at Partial Differential Equations in Mechanics 1 by A. P. S. Selvadurai.
This book
- covers the basics in chapters 2 and 3.
- explains reduction to canonical forms in Section 4.2.
- gives examples in Section 4.3.
