I've come multiple times across statements like these

Representation theory remains the method of choice for simplifying the physical analysis of systems possessing (a high degree of) symmetry and its appearance is ubiquitous in, for example, high energy physics.

But I never really quite understood what is meant by this. Could someone explain me, perhaps with an example, what is meant with statements like these?
