I'm doing a minor in Pure Mathematics and have just been given my first essay assignment for math ever. The topic I chose is Prime Numbers and Cryptography.

I intend to start with the history of prime numbers and how it was more of a curious property of math studied earlier on and go on into the necessities of large prime numbers in our daily life through public key encryption specifically RSA key encryption. I have done the necessary reading for the application part and I am still reading more on the history of prime numbers to decide which parts will be relevant to my essay.

The problem is I have never written a math essay before and I'm struggling with defining a structure and what would be necessary from the historical perspective. My essay is supposed to be 5 - 10 pages.

Does anyone have any recommended essays I can read to infer good structuring and referencing? It doesn't have to be on the same topic. Just a general 5 page math essay with good structure. Also if you have any good recommendations that I can cite for the history of prime numbers in Ancient Greece I would would really appreciate that as well.

  • $\begingroup$ An English translation of Euclid's Elements is freely available online. That seems as good a place as any to start researching the ancient Greeks' interest with prime numbers. $\endgroup$ – Daron Mar 30 '17 at 12:29

I found this interesting catalogue. They aren't high quality essays but it's a good start.
