Because you could spend all your time just trying to catch up with other people have done and are doing, while they have the fun of discovering uncharted territory and the honor of staking it. It's a reasonable question to ask. The answer is that one has to strike a balance, and at his early point that balance will lean towards studying since he has yet to reach the frontier.
