@Max: Thanks for reply, but I've decided to read through "visualizing quaternions" after all. The formula you mentioned makes things a bit easier to understand, but I guess it will still take some time until it "clicks" and I get complete understanding. I wish there were an easy geometric representation of quaternion multiplication. (in 3D cross product, dot product, addition and subtraction have an easy geometric explanation)

@Max I'm looking for analogies between 4d quaternion multiplication and 3d space's vector cross product. In 3d cross product between v and v or v and -v also won't give you perpendicular vector. Purely imaginary quaternions is not what I'm looking for.
