comment Homotopy and watershed
The question does seem to be a basic question: "What is homotopy theory and what is it good for?" The watershed discussion seems to be a bit of a red herring. (1.1) Homotopy doesn't preserve area/volume. (2.1) Homotopy preserves topological properties such as number of "holes". (2.2) All over the place in mathematics. Reading an online book on Algebraic Topology might help answer these questions.
