@Lopsy Yeah, I know the people who posted it there. The origin is actually a biology teacher at a high school. I was given the problem by that very teacher about 4 years ago.

@HSN Absolutely, feel free to use the problem as you wish. It is not mine, but I know the author would have no qualms with it being shared. As per my interpretation of the problem, it asks simply "What is the minimum number of people who are ill on day n?" To me, this means using any particular process of combinations to produce the "optimized" minimum for that particular n. I do not assert this to necessarily be the correct interpretation, though.
