@Hurkyl I think so. If it wouldn't be simple it would contain an nontrivial ideal, but then $R$ also has a nontrivial ideal.

@arthur Should I think of a basis like a basis of a vector space ? That is the only "basis" that I learned, but I thought you maybe mean something different with it.
