@user251257, ah, of course. I haven't considered that $\limsup \frac{\lVert x_{k+1} - a \rVert}{\lVert x_k -a \rVert^2} = \mu$. That might be just good enough for me as I would prefer not to assume existence of the second derivatives. Thanks guys.
