Fundamentally, these methods still use bases. I'm interested in more abstract methods that work with pure quantities, without having to break down into convenient units. I suppose it would be interesting to see what the largest quantities a savant could 'handle' are, and to find out which shapes correspond with which numbers. Presumably some pattern would emerge in terms of numbers that appear to be similar in shape, which might give clues as to the underlying method.
