@MarcvanLeeuwen In the scalar case if we allow $n \rightarrow \infty$ the it would be a generalized Fourier series. For finite $n$, "truncated generalized Fourier series"? Basically the resulting matrix has the entries in the linear span of $\lbrace \phi_i \rbrace$. Have this matrices been studied somewhere? How would you search for literature? I am interested in their kernel.

IHMO I think that Tunring's model of computation did not required infinite memory. As far as I remember The original paper talks about "unbounded" tape (see eprints.gla.ac.uk/4481/1/4481.pdf?ref=Sex%C5%9Ehop.Com page 3 for a discussion). This means that the length of the tape is unknown a priory but not infinite.
