@J.M., sorry I do not understand. If I were to expand $f_{n+2}$ the way I do it, I would end up with $2f_n + f_{n - 2} + f_{n - 3}$. Again, I can make this work if I know what I am trying to get. I wonder if you have read the question correctly - I am looking for even-valued (not even-indexed) fib numbers. If my assumption is mistaken, then sorry. However, I am not sure how to systematically arrive at a relation you have given and how to use it to help me simplify things.
