comment Is there a Möbius torus?
They might not meet all the technical details of the definition; but as long as you're willing to overlook the defect where it punches through its side, you can buy glass klein bottles as conversation pieces even if you're trapped in 3-space.

comment Check if a point is within an ellipse
@rsanchezsaez Probably Srivatsan's because square roots are slow; if you're concerned about performance writing both and benching them is probably the best route. Alternately, you could try posing the question on Stack Overflow.

comment Why not write $\sqrt{3}2$?
I suspect the fact that we can read the former aloud as "...two ecks" while the latter has to be read as "...ecks times two" in order to be unambiguous with ".... multiplied by two" is a factor as well.

comment What mathematical ideas/concepts became obsolete due to technological progress?
"Nine times seven, thought Shuman with deep satisfaction, is sixty-three, and I don't need a computer to tell me so. The computer is in my own head. And it was amazing the feeling of power that gave him."

At the point of it having come up twice because most of the press neglected to run the 'we goofed' story, should I blow mine away too or leave it up but edited to indicate it's no good?

Would the series fail to converge if you tried to compute the number of flips before you had an N% chance of going bust?

Hyperphysics has a graph showing the piecewise nature of temperature vs energy across phase changes. hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/thermo/phase.html

comment Troll Maths : Bijection between P(N) and N?
@Ilya You're clearly not the intended target of this sort of trolling; but there are lots of people who will get hung up on even simpler forms of troll math: ex an algebraic sequence using a divide by zero step to 'prove' that 2 = 1, or other nonsense.

comment What are some examples of a mathematical result being counterintuitive?
@I.J.Kennedy I have no idea what your email address is, or how to find it. Robert Israel's profile links to a page with his address; why not email him a request directly?

@I.J.Kennedy if you feel $43 isn't a significant amount of money, will you buy me a copy?
