Odd bases will not be necessary. I might experiment with base 1024, but primarily I needed this for base 256. Thank you for your time and effort :-)

@amd: Yes, that's what I'm trying to accomplish (as part of bigint library I'm making. I know this has been done by many other, more competent people than me, but I'm making one just for the exercise :-))

@lulu: No, that won't work. Consider the two binary numbers 1 and 1. If you divide each digit by 2 you get 0, and when you add 0 and 0 you get 0. The correct average should be 1.

I forgot to mention in the question that A is the shortest leg (A<=B). In that case, am I correct in assuming there's only one solution for C and B in your equations?
