I'm a math/programming teacher and freelance programmer. My first language was Scheme, and I have a major soft spot for functional programming. I read SICP every year and do all of the exercises (so I'm pretty good at hw-type problems.)

comment If Bob and Alice never met in class, at least one of them missed at least half of the classes
I addressed that in the last paragraph. It doesn't matter if they collectively attended all the lectures or not. The argument still holds. I'll reformulate my argument a bit.

I don't think this is right. I don't think you're counting the lectures correctly. Bob and Alice could both be missing from the lectures. If you subtract the number of lectures missed by Bob, you're also subtracting the number of lectures missed mutually by Bob and Alice. Even then, doesn't this just show that of the missed lectures someone had to have missed at least half of the missed lectures?

Wow that was really dumb of me. Thanks. It's always something like that. That wasn't specified, but now it makes perfect sense.

I could write a program. I was wondering if there were better techniques without using a computer. This isn't homework. I picked the book up for funsies.

comment A more subtle marble drawing problem.
Already done. I have numbers through Monte Carlo simulation. The problem is, I need this to run quickly because it's the basis of another computer program, specifically an evolutionary algorithm that needs to redo numbers every time it makes a mutation.
