comment Why is $(3,1+\sqrt{-5})^2=(2-\sqrt{-5})$ in $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{-5}]$
Thanks for the higher viewpoint! Can I ask how you know $P$ is of index 3 in the ring of integers? The only relevant thing I know is the index of a principal ideal in the ring of integers is equal to the norm of the generator over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Could you say something about my question on zero vector in tangent space?

comment On the definition of critical point
But can I ask why such a definition is counter-intuitive considering the circle example I give in the question? Why is defining critical point this way beneficial in that case?

comment A “wrong” counterexample to splitting lemma in linear algebra
@hunter I now understand I gave a wrong counterexample to a wrong statement... Now I just wonder if someone could give me a good reference on this (a nice treatment of this in a linear algebra book).

Can I ask what $v$ means in your formula $df_p(v)=f′(p)v$?
