@DavidK I think the average would be $\frac{\sum_{j=1}^{N-1} j}{N-1} \rightarrow \frac{\frac{N(N-1)}{2}}{N-1}\rightarrow \frac{N(N-1)}{2(N-1)} \rightarrow \frac{N}{2}$ Right?
