@DavidK I think the average would be $\frac{\sum_{j=1}^{N-1} j}{N-1} \rightarrow \frac{\frac{N(N-1)}{2}}{N-1}\rightarrow \frac{N(N-1)}{2(N-1)} \rightarrow \frac{N}{2}$ Right?

Didn't you mean from $2$ to $N-1$ when $i=1$ because $j$ is equal to $i+1$?
