What do you mean the triangle has transformations? I thought maybe you meant symmetries, but I don't see how a translation will give a symmetry, so I am clueless.

I should mention that this was not in our actual course. It was supplementary lectures. I can envision a nice course where free groups come fairly naturally. Either based on D&F or just in general.

my personal experience was that I learned them smack dab in the middle of my group theory course, just before rings. I found them to be super intuitive, and they made me realize I was not understanding some things about groups that I though I had.

I don't understand your parenthetical remarks. Is your question "How do calculate a linear transformation of one given triangle into another?" If so, what is the rotation and translation part of your question? Also, if that is your question, you can calculate it by change of basis formulas.

I think that this is the correct approach. Seeing that groups are the quotients of the free group really clears up group presentations and prepares one for other algebraic structures.

J.M.'s link will undoubtedly help you move towards your question. But just a reference if you want a nice soft introduction is Howie's Fields and Galois Theory. I find his treatment of constructibility to be very nice. However I notice that Dinesh added the (relevant) tag "field-extensions". Which means I don't know your background. You should edit your question to include more information about your background so that we can help you more than pointers to resources(or at least make sure those pointers are the right pointers).
