There are a number of competitions in mental arithmetic where people compete at a very high level, using special techniques. A specific mathematician may not know about these techniques but they certainly exist.

I think I expressed myself incorrectly. What I was trying to convey was that you cannot assume something always works, just because you can't think of a counterexample.

There is a useful lesson here: When you have an algorithm or a theorem involving an ordering, it usually works for the opposite ordering too (though not always).

@Ben Crowell: Do you usually pay for the number of pages? I would argue that paying by the page is the reason many textbooks from american publishers are bad.
