For me, fun is taking a program, language, whatever and making it do things it's designer never envisioned it doing. It comes in handy when I'm asked to do something a little outside the norm as part of my job.

@Matt: If your primary interest is doing dimensional analysis, yes that is the easiest way (and in fact that is how the system this is question is part of work). OTOH if the dimensional analysis is something you will to offload to software so you can deal with real a system, it's generally easier to work in unit that directly express interesting properties of the system (power, voltage, force, energy, etc.).
