I read G&R as allowing $\nu$ to be any complex number. G&R is pretty careful about listing the constraints, so if it says nothing about a parameter, it can be anything that makes sense for the definition of the function. $\gamma$ must be real and positive-definite; $\alpha,\beta$ may be complex, with the real part positive-definite.
