In light of the List of Interesting Math Blogs I thought it would benefit the community if we have a list of textbooks for specific topics.

Trusted users and/or I will edit this post depending on the answers. Please try to include the textbook name, the field it relates too, the author and if you want, give it a rating. I am not sure about how the rating works but lets say 5 is something a first year mathematics student needs while 1 is for high school and 10 is for advanced levels. If you can think of a better rating system, I am all ears.

I will have the categories setup as following:

See similar, more specific questions on category theory, computer science, and number theory. Combining all book questions into one seems like it might be worthwhile if it is easy to navigate. Perhaps one "answer" per field and the question contains links to each answer? – Larry Wang Jul 28 '10 at 15:51

This is way too general, how about "list of interesting and well-explained textbooks in [A specific topic/specific focus group]". y suggestion allow people to actually vote for the best suggestion, instead of vote for the best topic... – Chao Xu Jul 28 '10 at 15:52

@Mgccl: Yeah, the reason I don't really like that system is we end up with 20 questions that all look like "what is the best book to learn about x." I guess the books tag will have to take care of that for now. – Larry Wang Jul 28 '10 at 16:16

I think this question as stated is too general for math.SE: questions about subfields (as opposed to all of math) would be vastly preferable (and there already are many of them). Consequently, am voting to close. – Akhil Mathew Jul 28 '10 at 17:00
