Mathematics Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for people studying math at any level and professionals in related fields. It's 100% free, no registration required.

What is the typical salary for math professors in the US? Is it about the same for bigger schools and liberal arts schools? I notice that many just talk about the math they do but they dont actually talk about their job and salary.

Thanks everyone.

I don't think this question is on-topic, so I voted to close as off-topic (Nate explains it better than I could in his comment). The answer is also heavily dependent on what region we're talking about here, so I could have voted as too localized. Finally, how is their not talking about their salary different from people doing other jobs? – t.b. Jul 7 '11 at 20:22

That's because this site is for the discussion of mathematics itself, not the details of jobs in the profession. However, for the U.S., the American Mathematical Society publishes an annual salary survey; the most recent one can be found at ams.org/notices/201103/rtx110300438p.pdf (edit: fixed the link) – Nate Eldredge Jul 7 '11 at 20:24

More than we can easily spend (because we spend so much time doing math), but much, much less than we deserve. – Pete L. Clark Jul 7 '11 at 20:33
