A) What is the expected value of a card (from a standard deck of cards) assuming that aces are worth 1 point and face cards are worth 10?

B) A game consists of drawing a card and rolling a die simultaneously. If the value of the die is greater than the value of the card (the card values are as in part A above) then you win a number of dollars equal to the value on the die. If the die and the card have equal value, nobody wins anything. If the card is of higher value than the die, you lose 1 dollar. For example, suppose you roll a 4 on the die and draw a 6 of clubs. Then you lose 1 dollar. If, on the other hand, you roll a 5 on the die and draw a 2 of spades, then you win 5 dollars. What is the expected value of the game?

Since this is homework, it would be great if you could please say what you have tried, where you are running into difficulty, etc. – Matthew Conroy Nov 28 '12 at 4:58
What is the probability a card has value $1$? Value $2$? And so on. (The answer for $10$ is different from the other answers.) Now that you know the probabilities, can you find the expected value? – André Nicolas Nov 28 '12 at 5:27
