Degrees of freedom for F test for general linear model

I have been told that the degrees of freedom for an F test of a general linear model (the one using matrices) is:

$$ F_{r, n - p} $$

I know that $n$ is the number of observations and $p$ is the number of parameters, but what is $r$?
