What do you mean by beginner? What courses have you taken? Obviously you need some algebra and topology under your belt; how comfortable are you in these areas? – Michael Albanese Sep 15 '12 at 14:59

There is no succinct path to learning any mathematical subject, every learning takes its due time. But in the meanwhile, Allen Hatcher's book is a very good book to learn algebraic topology as he takes the reader through the course thoroughly.

Also, it helps that he puts the book up online in pdf form for free.

Good book, but I guess that it is too advanced for beginners. I suggest other books, like Croom or Vick. – Sigur Sep 15 '12 at 14:59
That's true, but usually I feel like a good grasp of Munkres's book is adequate enough to go straight into Hatcher's book. – aviness Sep 15 '12 at 15:10
Munkres' book is also a great book. And Massey's book too. – Sigur Sep 15 '12 at 15:18

Personally, I find Hatcher's book slanted toward Allen Hatcher's view of algebraic topology, which does not reflect the subject as a whole. There are other books out there, May's Concise Course in Algebraic Topology, for example, which are more to my taste. – Justin Young Sep 15 '12 at 16:20
