For a finite abelian group $A$ and a prime power $q$, what does $[A]_q$ denote?

It could mean the elements of order $q$. Or it could mean the elements annihilated by $q$. Or it could tell you what it means somewhere else in the document where you found it. – Gerry Myerson Aug 20 '12 at 5:55
