It is not too difficult to find a binary code consisting of $8$ words, each $13$ bits long, keeping the distance between every pair of words at least $7$. I know it is not possible to find $9$ words with that property, but I could not prove it. Can anybody please help me?

You can use the Plotkin bound.
$d=7$ is odd and $2d+1 = 2 \cdot 7 + 1 = 15 > 13$, so $$A_2(13,7) \le 2 \left\lfloor \frac{7+1}{2 \cdot 7 + 1 - 13} \right\rfloor = 8.$$ You said you already have an example of a binary code of size 8, length 13, and minimum distance 7, so this proves that $A_2(13,7) = 8$. |
